Eligibility Requirements

Conditions to Be Met

  • The applicant must reside in Québec.
  • The vehicle for which a rebate application is submitted must be on the list of eligible vehicles provided on this website.
  • The vehicle must be new and registered for the first time in Québec between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2015. Demonstration vehicles used by car dealers are also eligible under the program upon their resale if the number of kilometers on the odometer is lower than 10,000 km at the time of the transaction.
  • Only one rebate application may be submitted per eligible vehicle.
  • The vehicle must remain registered in Québec for a minimum period of:
    • Twelve months for an applicant who acquires two vehicles or less in the same year.
    • Thirty-six months for an applicant who acquires three vehicles or more in the same year.

Your request must be sent to the Government of Québec within six months of the vehicle's registration date.

The Ministry may require that the financial assistance granted be reimbursed in the event of noncompliance with the program conditions.

Calculating the Rebate Amount

The rebate amount is calculated by the program manager, taking into account the following:

  • Type of acquisition (purchase or lease, and lease term)
  • Vehicle type (electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid or low-speed)
  • Capacity of the vehicle's electric battery
  • Date of the vehicle's first registration

Purchase or Lease

In order not to penalize consumers who choose to lease their vehicle, electric vehicle rebates are also available for long-term leases.

The rebate amount is calculated based on the lease term. The lease period for the vehicle must be a minimum of 12 months to be eligible for a rebate. A lease of over 48 months makes it possible to receive a rebate equal to the purchase rebate.

Vehicle Type

Only all-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and low-speed electric vehicles can meet the conditions of the program.

Battery Capacity

For all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the rebate amount depends on the battery capacity. The minimum threshold to qualify for the rebate has been set at 4 kWh. The rebate amount then increases in proportion to the battery capacity, with the maximum being reached for a 17 kWh battery.

Year of Acquisition

The amounts allocated will be relatively similar in 2012 and 2013, but then will decrease in 2014 and 2015.

To find out the exact amount of the rebate you could receive, see the list of eligible vehicles and the corresponding amounts available on this website.

About the Program

The Drive Electric Program stems from the Electric Vehicles 2011-2020 Action Plan. It aims to facilitate and accelerate the introduction of electric vehicles in Québec. The use of electric vehicles is essential to meet the Québec government's objective to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 20% below 1990 levels by 2020.

The administrative conditions of the program are set out in the program's Normative Framework (Format PDF, 153 Ko).
